As far as corporate turnarounds go, there are few better leaders than Amitabh Chaudhry.
Now into his fifth year as the top boss at Axis Bank and with another 3 more to come, the transformation is visible for all to see. Axis Bank has consolidated its position as India’s third-largest private sector bank and has set its sights on the number 2 spot. The bank’s $1.64-billion buyout of Citi’s consumer business in India was a big feather in his already impressive hat.
But Axis Bank isn’t his first turnaround rodeo. Prior to joining the banking industry, Amitabh spent 9 years as MD & CEO at HDFC Life. Under his leadership, the company emerged as one of the country’s largest private life insurers. He spearheaded its IPO which is undoubtedly one of the most successful listings in the financial services space.
His professional career began in 1987 with Bank of America before joining Credit Lyonnais Securities. In 2006 he was appointed as MD & CEO of Infosys BPO and was instrumental in making the business extremely profitable with an impressive global footprint.
He earned his engineering credentials from BITS Pilani and is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
A proud father, an avid book reader, a CEO who believes keeping his wife happy is the hardest part of his job, Amitabh Chaudhry has spent decades leading and transforming businesses into success stories.
We will be back next week with more insights from India’s top leadership.
